Ocean Cashell – Youth in employment

Ocean came to the Rotorua youth centre looking for assistance in getting employment. She was keen and proactive; she took the initiative and came in on her own to find out what was available. Staff at the youth centre supported her through her journey referring her to many employers that have great relationships with youth and had current vacancies. She was advised on potential job opportunities and how to approach this which showed dedication and good traits to have when applying for a job.

Currently, Ocean is working at Third Place Café. She was given regular work experience hours one day a week, learning the basics of working in a café. Her job entailed learning the skill of serving customers, waiting tables whilst learning general cleanliness of the café. The management comments that ‘Ocean is always moving and finding stuff to do’, showing her keenest and interest in the job which has led her to gain paid hours during the weekend when short staffed or needing an extra hand. She loves the opportunity she has been given to upskill with the support and help of collaborating with Rotorua Youth Centre.
