Not all learning happens in the classroom. Young people need experiences outside the classroom to become committed, responsible and fulfilled citizens of the world. The Award is open to all 14-24 year olds regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests and is the world’s leading youth achievement award. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievements. Since its launch over 60 years ago, the Award has inspired millions of young people to transform their lives.

Kia ora and welcome to the Buried Village The Buried Village is a historical site with historic beginnings. Currently one of New Zealand’s most visited historic sites, The Buried Village has origins which can be traced back to the Depression, and the 1931 arrival at Te Wairoa of Reg and Vi Smith, who along with their young sons, travelled in a borrowed car to what was a derelict cottage on overgrown land. That moment began what would become a long and inspiring story of hard-work, vision and dedication. More than 80 years on, a third generation of Smiths continue the guardianship of the Buried Village. Building on the hardwork of their forbearers, they have developed the site into an award winning heritage attraction that is visited by thousands of people the world over. True pioneers in the growth and development of tourism in New Zealand, the Smith family have a proud history of commitment that spans over eight decades, and their dedicated family continues to grow with their loyal staff and ‘honorary Smiths’ who are committed to providing you with a truly memorable experience.

The CARE Village was founded on the belief that there had to be a better way of delivering aged care, one which not only preserved the lifestyles of those needing care, but also challenged traditional institutional practices in the wider industry. The CARE Village is the first of its kind to be built in the world outside of Holland. The concept of giving people with dementia the opportunity to go about their normal lives is based on the renowned Dutch dementia village, De Hogeweyk. Our model of care is based on creating and conserving lifestyle, independence and most importantly, community. At The CARE Village, we strive to continuously challenge and better the way aged care is delivered, both here in New Zealand and world-wide. We have worked closely with the Ministry of Health in developing our leading-edge model and our highly-skilled staff, along with the latest in technology, mean residents have the freedom to move about the village in a safe and constant environment. Where possible, residents are also able to come and go from the village as they please.
